Young Reporters for the Environment holds an Annual International Competition for young people aged 11-25 involved in the programme.

The purpose of the competition is for young people to investigate environmental issues, propose solutions, report it through various communication and journalistic ways to a local network and raise awareness by sharing it with an international community.

2024/2025 COMPETITION THEME

Ecosystem Restoration

We are thrilled to announce the launch of this year's international competition, centered around the theme of Ecosystem Restoration. As our planet faces unprecedented environmental challenges, this theme aims to inspire innovative solutions and creative ideas for rejuvenating ecosystems around the world. Participants will have the unique opportunity to contribute to the global conversation on restoring natural habitats, preserving biodiversity, and promoting sustainable practices.


2024/2025 Competition Deadlines

  • Thursday 27th March: ASPnet schools submissions deadline to YRE International Competition

  • Wednesday 30th April 2025: International Deadline for Competition Submissions. National Offices to submit national entries to the International Competition

  • Early-June 2025: Shortlisting and International Jury Meeting

  • Mid-June 2025: Announcement of 2024/2025 International Competition Winners


Who can participate and How?

The Young Reporters for the Environment International Competition is open to those aged 11-25 participating as individuals or groups of young people through their school, college, university, Scout Group, or youth group. The YRE programme is run by FEE's national member organisation, who runs the programme and/or National Competition. All the entries to the YRE International Competition must first be submitted through the National Competition in each YRE member country. Students may submit more than one type of submission to different media categories. 

Participant criteria:

  • Young people aged 11-25 who are participating in the YRE programme (schools, universities, youth groups, etc)

  • Students from International Schools that are registered as Eco-Schools.

  • Scouts Groups (from countries where FEE has no national member)

  • UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet)

Please note:
All young reporters must first submit their entry to their national/ network competition and be selected as the first-place winner before being submitted to the International Competition by National Operators.  

Young reporters may submit more than one type of submission to different media categories.

 

Age Categories

There are three age categories in the YRE International Competition:

  • 11-14 years

  • 15-18 years

  • 19-25 years

This age defines which category they can enter. The participant's age on the day they submit their entry to the National Competition must be provided. For International Schools or Scout Groups without a YRE National Manager, it is the age on the submission deadline.

Those sending a group project must state the age of the oldest member of their team. Photo entries for all three subcategories are submitted within the one age category 11-25. 


Competition Categories

The theme for the 2024/2025 competition is Ecosystem Restoration. These are the four media categories for the competition. Under each media there are different sub-categories depending on age group or category style. Click on each media type for more information on sub-categories and examples from past years!

Article Category

Articles can be submitted in the form of:

  • Newspaper articles and columns (online or print)

  • Blog posts or long Facebook posts

 

Photo Category

The photo category is divided into three sub-categories:

  • One Take Photo (previously known as the single reportage photo)

  • Staged Campaign Photo

  • Photo Story (3-5 photos)

Video Category

The video category consists of the following two sub-categories:

  • Long-form Reportage [max 3 mins] (documentary, news report on Youtube or Vimeo)

  • Short-form Campaign (TikTok, Youtube Shorts, Instagram Reels)

 

Podcast Category

The new podcast category will be launched in 2024/2025 and is open for the national competition All national winning podcast segments will be awarded the Gosia Luszczek Podcasting Award.

Get inspired by last year entries!

The 23/24 edition of YRE International Competition received 248 submissions from a remarkable 46 countries, marking the highest level of global participation to date. Out of these, 70 submissions were shortlisted and 25 winning entries of those were selected by our esteemed YRE International Jury, comprised of experts from journalism and environmental NGOs.
